Kalau dilihat dari film tersebut, mereka ingin membuat sesuatu yang baru dan berbeda dibandingkan situs jejaring sosial lainnya yang pada saat itu sedang booming di kalangan anak-anak muda di Harvard, Friendster.com dan MySpace.com. Mereka ingin membuat suatu perbedaan diantara keduanya berupa exclusive rights yang berarti hal-hal yang eksklusif mengenai profil anggota dari situs jejaring sosial yang dibuat.

Berawal dari sebuah kemarahan mr. Zuckerberg akibat kesalahpahamannya terhadap pacarnya saat itu, Erica, iya menuliskan kemarahannya di blognya (layaknya sebuah diary). Kesalahpahaman itu membuat Erica men-judge bahwa seorang computer nerd akan berhasil dalam meraih kesuksesan dan kekayaan tetapi dengan saat itu juga ia tidak akan mampu menjalankan kehidupan sosial seperti berhubungan dengan lawan jenis. Tentunya ia tidak akan disukai oleh wanita yang mana pada saat itu dating merupakan hal yang sangat diidam-idamkan oleh para mahasiswa.

Akibat permasalahan itu, Zuckerberg jengkel terhadap Erica dan membuat sebuah situs Facemash.com dengan cara meretas jaringan di kampus Hardvard. Dalam waktu beberapa jam ia mampu mendapatkan 22000 hits dalam 4 jam. Sebuah hal yang fenomena karena ia hanya menghabiskan waktu 4 jam untuk mendapatkan hits sebanyak itu. Namun, hal positif yang dapat diambil adalah kemampuan Zuckerberg dalam meretas jaringan komputer di kampus Hardvard membuat ia dilirik oleh kalangan mahasiswa untuk membuat sebuah projek yang disebut dengan HarvardEdu. Ya, memang dalam hal ini ia tertarik untuk bergabung dan bahkan menemukan sebuah ide baru yang membuat situs jejaring sosial terbaru bernama theFacebook.com.

Yang menarik adalah ketika ia menemukan sebuah ide dan yang mampu membuat theFaceboook berbeda dengan situs jejaring sosial lainnya adalah adanya sebuah kata in relationship. Ya, berawal dari seorang temannya yang bertanya mengenai apakah seorang gadis yang berada di kelasnya (baca 1 kelas dengan Zuckerberg) dekat dengan seorang pria lain atau sedang mendambakan seorang pria yang bagaimana.
