Regarding story about the architect Alvar Aalto

At this present age, cell phones now infiltrating in people's lives. Call it like products made by Nokia. Mobile phone manufacturers which coming from country of Finland has profit of hundreds of millions of dollars or even billions of dollars from their sales. But, you know, if Finland was not only known for a cell phone productThe subject of this time leading us to a man which came from that country, which has been contributing to the worldwide work in the field of science that is in the architectural field.

Born on February 3, 1898 in a town called Kuortane. His father was Johan Henrik Aalto who was an inspector (as sheriff) in a region in Finland, while his mother was Selly (read-Selma) Matilda which was the postmistress. He was given the name of Hugo Alvar Henrik Aalto (often known as Alvar Aalto).

Young Aalto was study and finish elementary school, middle school, high school at a school called the Jyväskylä Lyceum school in 1916. Then in 1921, he was a graduation in architecture with the alma mater of Helsinki University of Technology.

Alvar Aalto's love to the world of architecture to make it known by many people. His works are known by many people because it uses the architectural model building that has a style unique functionalist / expressionist and humane style. Though his early work is more directed to the neo-classical-style building. And indeed he eventually adapt and functionalism symbol that can be interpreted in a modern building.

Most of the works of Alvar Aalto architecture can be seen on buildings spread across Europe and America. These buildings were the work of Aalto inspired by rational thoughts and intuition. It incorporates both the mind and make it a single line pattern which drawn into the image of a building. The results of his thinking now is the inspiration for architects which want to design buildings with style modern-functionalist/expressionist and humane styleHere a few work of Alvar Aalto:

Academic Bookshop at Helsinki, Finlandia

Baker Dormitory at Cambridge, Massachusets Institute of Technology

Mount Angel Library at Mount Angel, Oregon

Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki-Finlandia

Aalto in 1976, precisely on May 11 died. He left so much of his work which very impressive. If we see that, beginning with the architectural design things that are patterned Classicism, then move on to functionalism and ends with style monumentalism. There is some Aalto`s quotes that I choose from brainyquote.com and wikipedia.org

Building art is a synthesis of life in materialised form. We should try to bring in under the same hat not a splintered way of thinking, but all in harmony together.

Nothing is as dangerous in architecture as dealing with separated problems. If we split life into separated problems we split the possibilities to make good building art.

We should concentrate our work not only to a separated housing problem but housing involved in our daily work and all the other functions of the city.

God created paper for the purpose of drawing architecture on it. Everything else is at least for me an abuse of paper.

We should work for simple, good, undecorated things" and he continues, "but things which are in harmony with the human being and organically suited to the little man in the street.

According from Wikipedia.org Aalto's awards included the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture from the Royal Institute of British Architects (1957) and the Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects (1963). He was elected a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1957. And Aalto has been commemorated in a number of ways:

  • Alvar Aalto is the eponym of the Alvar Aalto Medal, now considered one of world architecture’s most prestigious awards.
  • Aalto was featured in the 50 mk note in the last series of the Finnish markka(before its replacement by the Euro in 2002).
  • 1998 marked the centenary anniversary of Aalto's birth. The occasion was marked in Finland not only by several books and exhibitions but also by the promotion of specially-bottled red and white Aalto Wine, and a specially-designed cup-cake.
  • In the year of his death, 1976, Aalto was commomorated on a Finnish postage stamp.
  • Aalto University, a new Finnish university (an amalgamation of Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki School of Economics and TaiK) established in 2010, is named after Alvar Aalto.
  • An Alvar Aallon katu (Alvar Aalto Street) can be found in three different Finnish cities: Jyväskylä, Oulu and Seinäjoki.
